What a wonderful afternoon of absolute fun, lots of friendship and hilarious laughter at the High Tea Fundraiser for the Scouting Pow Wow.

Whilst on holiday at Kasouga recently we visited the most beautiful church in Southwell. We were lucky enough to get the keys for the church and were able to view the stained glass windows fron the inside.

Cards for Colleagues

I needed to make 3 cards for colleagues of mine at work.

Each card needed to hold a small gift - I decided on 2 little slabs of chocolate.

The 2nd card was quite simple....

and also held 2 mini chocolates in the pocket on the right hand side.

The left side held the "thank you" tags.

The 3rd card had a tea-bag folded Christmas Tree - nicely decorated.

... with simple pockets which held the chocolates and tags.

Christmas Wreath

A friend made the most beautiful Christmas Wreath a little while back - so I had to try my hand at making something similar.

I just cut out a number of STARS, HEARTS, and LEAVES which were in different sizes.

Pasted some pretty Christmas paper onto them and arranged then on the wreath.

I fitted in some embellishments to complete the item.

It now hangs on my front door.

Sixer Council Meeting - 9th Benoni

Sixer Council Meeting - to be held on 28th August.

The next Sixer Council is to be next Saturday when we will meet with the Sixers and Seconds of 9th Benoni.
At these meetings, the cub scout leaders give input of games, outings etc.

I enjoy making something special for each cub scout - to show them that they are indeed a special person.

These are very simple to make and the pattern is obtainable on the internet or here.

Instead of them being just plain boxes, I added some scouting pictures..

Handy handbag

My mom stays in a retirement village in Port Elizabeth and all her children stay far away from her. Each year we try and arrange something special for her.

This year I made for her (and 2 of her friends) a little handbag which contained:

1 box of chocolates

1 small cold drink

1 ticket to the theatre

1 limousine collection and drop off

Of course, all three old ducks were thrilled with my mom's gift and are looking forward to the limo ride!

The handbags are made from 2 pieces of 30 x 30 scrap paper joined together and folded strategically.

And then decorated as one wishes.
Handles are put on at the end.

A lovely little idea for a small gift.

That special little bag - 25th May 2010

I found this most delightful purse on the internet made out of a juice bottle.

I love craft work and enjoy showing our cub and leaders how to make cute, useful items from rubbish..... as they say "from litter to glitter"!

Instead of leaving it plain, I have decorated it with pretty lace and added a gold chain.

It is very simple and easy to make and I am sure all your cub scouts will enjoy this.

The girl cubs will enjoy decorating it and making it look pretty and dainty.

For the boys we have a wallet also made from recycleable material.... this time a cereal box.

Very cute indeed!

The pattern for this wallet I also found on the internet .... but after spending 10 minutes searching for it, I cannot find it!

So if you nee the template let me know and I can let you have it.

That special "recycled" gift

This is such a nifty way to wrap a gift using recycled material!

Would you ever guess that this is actually from a Coke bottle?

I have used a 1 litre Coke bottle (but a 2 litre works just as well) and cut it approximately 11 cm from the base.

I then decoupaged the bottle with a serviette and left to completely dry.

The top section is then cut into 5 equal parts as shown.

I first of all bent these outwards and then inwards to ensure the "fold" was fixed.

The top corners were rounded.

and then all you need to do is close each one and these form the lid!

Now it can be decorated as you wish!

A small gift can be placed inside for that special person.

Simple and easy and best of all, using recyclable material.

Recycled Bottle Tops

At Cub Scouts we teach the young ones a lot about recycling and reusing items found in and around the house. We are always on the look-out for new ideas - so if you have any easy ideas for young kids, please leave me a comment and let me know - I really would appreciate it.

Anyway - this is such a lovely idea for Mother's Day.... a bottle-top brooch!

We had a whole lot of bottle tops which I washed out and left to dry in the sun. I filled them partially with pollyfilla - a cement like substance. This filled the sides up nicely.

I sprayed them all gold.

Put a dab of craft glue (that dries clear) in the centre and drop your beads in randomly.
.... or you can create your own pattern.

If you don't want to use beads, a brilliant idea (from my dh) is to use broken buttons.

... in the process of drying ...

These brooch clips I added last - glued on with special jewellry glue which is fast drying.

I really though these came out well and an easy craft for the cub scouts to handle.

A wedding card!

This wedding card is for a very special friend of mine who gets married next year. Unfortunately I am not able to make the wedding as she is in London... so this has truly been a labour of love!

I saw this beautiful card over at "Cards by Tiets" - a very talented young lady - who kindly let me have the tutorial.

Can you believe this is all in one card?

It is just awesome... and I enjoyed making this card so much!

Her colours are purple with a touch of lime - so thought it only apt to use them for her card.

Let's just hope my special friend does not see it on the blog before it arrives in her post-box!

Sixer Council Meeting - 4th December 2009

Each term we hold a Sixer Council Meeting for our Cub Scouts.

As the new Six he now has some responsibilities to take care of at each Pack Meeting.

Our Sixer Council Meeting was held at the Wimpy Bar before all the others arrived.

I made them special, individual cards about their new role as a Sixer.

Sixer Councils are very special and the Cub must realise that these are great occasions to be part of - it must be fun!

Special boxes printed with cub and scout pictures were made for each cub.

Inside were chocolates!

.... cards were made for each Six and Second admiring how special and unique they are; and thanking them for always trying their best.

The cubs came up with some new suggestions for games for next term which we will try out. They told us all about the games they love that we already play and also what outings they hope that we can go on next term.

We have an awesome bunch of Sixers and Seconds and they all work together so well!

Carols by Candlelight - a nifty idea!

My APS, Sharon has been busy getting our Halloween Horrors bottles ready for our special pack meeting and came up with this wonderful idea to hold the candles for Carols by Candlelight.

We normally cut off the top of the 2 litre cold drink bottle and throw away but a candle fits perfectly into the top.

Tissue paper was glued on with Podge (the same as the Halloween bottles) for effect.
I think this is awesome and of course, very handy.

Halloween Horrors!

Aren't these just too cool for words?

We are having a sleep-over on the 30th October and before the cubs get to watch DVD's, we are going to get them to complete their own little horror lamp.

These are very simple to make and thanks to Pack-o-Fun for the great idea!
Cut a 2 litre plastic cold drink bottle to the desired size.
Tear tissue paper into pieces and paste onto bottle. I used podge and then painted the podge over the tissue paper as well just to make sure it stuck fast!

Decorate as desired but I cut out huge eyes from black cardboard. Fun foam can also be used.

A number of items can be used for the hair but whilst at a scrapping class, I purchased some really great 'ribbon' which was ideal.

The handles are made from pipe cleaners.

Now that they are completed, a small torch is placed inside at the bottom which gives it that eerie effect.

To hold the torch upright, a small amount of sea-sand can be placed in the bottom but making sure it does not become too heavy.

Fabulous Finger Puppets

These are such fabulous finger puppets to make for the kids - whether they are in cub scouts or home-school or even just to play around the house with friends.

There are 4 different puppets to choose from- a tiger, a crocodile, a bear and an elephant.

Even some of our cub scout leaders on training had fun making them!

Our craft today at Cub Scouts was great fun and very easy!

We took 6 tongue depressors.

4 across and then 2 at the back to hold them in place.

We use normal wood glue.

4 holes were drilled in the sticks so that the cubs could hang these on their doors.

Each cub could write whatever he wanted to that related to the theme.

Northern Lights Craft

Our craft this week at cubs was to make "the northern lights"

Place a considerable amount of dishwashing liquid in a square bowl - big enough to either take a size A4 or A5 paper - add water and stir and shake the water up to make lots and lots and lots of bubbles. (It is recommended not to use a straw as this mixes the colours together and that is not what you are wanting)Gently drizzle some colouring on top of the bubbles. You can drizzle them in a pattern or just any how. Use a few different colours.

Then gently place the paper on top of the bubbles and count to about 5. Lift the paper and "walah" you have the Northern Lights!

Mothers Day butterfly - 8th May 2008

At Cub's today, we made a beautiful butterfly for the mothers.

This is an extremely easy craft that all the cubs could manage in no time.

These are the shapes that need to be cut out.

2 x shapes
1 x pipe cleaner for feelers
1 x pipe cleaner for the body (twirled)
1 peg (which was painted)

Place the 2 pieces of paper together and scrunch up.

Feed the twirled "body" pipe cleaner along the other pipe cleaner and twist this around the scrunched up part of the butterfly.

The ends form the feelers which can be turned at the top.

The peg is attached to the back of the butterfly.

A little card can be attached for mom.

This can be used as a paper holder.

The cubs really enjoyed this as it was simple and easy.

Pretty Paper Craft

My mom turns 83 in June and my sister, brother and I are flying down to Port Elizabeth - about 1000 km away - to surprise her!

For her age she is extremely 'spritely' and 'op en wakker' .... so there is no chance of her having a heart attack on seeing us! .... but she will be over-joyed!

We have also arranged to go out for dinner with her best friends on the one evening.
I have specially made these little goodies for the table. Each one contains one chocolate.

Your own Ferrari!

These little cars that we made on our visit to the children's home were so easy - and on top of it we were using recycled material!

Take the inner from a toilet roll and paint it any colour you like.

Leave to dry and then make 4 holes so that the axle can be positioned. For the axle I used a kebab stick. This must be able to freely move in the toilet roll.

Next take 4 x coke bottle tops (or any other cold drink that comes in a bottle with a screw cap) and drill a small hole throught it. The kebab stick must just be able to fit through and must fit very snugly. It must have no movement here.

Your car is finished but you may want to cut a small section out of the top for the "driver's seat" and place a figurine in there.

We had numerous races among the children and they loved it.

Recycling - Skipping Rope

As part of our Recycling Badge, our cubs made this skipping rope using recycled cold drink bottles.

A 1.5 meter of sash cord was cut for each cub. This the cubs could decorate with koki pens with a design of their own choice.

A hole was punched out of each bottle top so that the rope could be fed through it and knotted on the other side.

I bought some coloured 'pom-poms' and inserted those inside the bottles to give them colour. Colour beads can also be used. Two elastic bands were placed on each bottle for grip.

All in all a good idea and relatively easy for the cubs to make.

Xhosa Peace Pipe

This was a wonderful activity to do for the Area Cub Fun Day .... the cubs thoroughly enjoyed them and they were relatively easy to make.

Cold drink tops were collected for weeks on end and then a small hole was drilled into each one - just big enough for a "bendable" straw to fit through.

The straw was positioned in place with a glue gum - just to make sure these stayed in place.
Small round bits of sponge were cut out and placed into each cold drink cap and then a small amount of the "magic mixture" was poured into each cap.

As soon as the cubs blew on the pipes, mounds of bubbles poured out!

Magic Mixture
Dishwashing up liquid - about a cup
2 litres of water
1 t of glycerine

Enjoy and have loads of fun!

Lava Lamp

This is a fun activity to do with your Cub Pack or class.

Take a cold drink bottle and fill the bottom with water - probably 200ml. Top up with cooking oil.
Add half an effervescent tablet - it does not matter which one ..... and watch what happens!

Your very own Lava Lamp!

This will keep the kids occupied for hours!

Butterflies in my tummy!

This is a quick and easy craft and the cubs made it very quickly.

Take a coffee filter and cut into a butterfly shape. The cubs then traced their own pattern onto the filter paper and painted whatever colours they wanted.

Ordinary wooden pegs were used, painted different colours and I stuck "eyes" onto them before the meeting as this can get rather tricky.

These they can put together with a small present for their fathers.

Octopus Fun

This is a magnificent activity / craft to do with the Cubs.

If you are doing an Underwater or Sea programme this is ideal. Cut out the octopus and get the cubs to colour them in. I used high-lighters which give them a nice, bright colour. Fold it around to form a peak, glueing A to B.

Place this on a smooth table and put a marble under the octopus...... and watch it take off!

The cubs will have endless fun with Octopus races!

Recycling Craft

We chose a very simple recycling craft and one very similar to the Mother's Day craft.

We have been collecting these tins over the years so we have plenty in stock - in all shapes and sizes.

What you do need to make sure of is that the lid has been cut off cleanly and there are no sharp edges.

Once that has been done the tins are washed, dried and painted with an undercoat and left to dry overnight.

Paint with the derired colour and leave to dry.

I have photos of all my cubs and therefore printed the most suitable, individual photo for the front of the tin and then I also pasted a group photo at the back. These "memory" stationery holders can then be kept for many years.

The photo is pasted on using decoupage clue on the back of the photo as well as over the front of the photo.

I added a little label on the side with the cub's name... held on with an elastic band.

This can be used for a variety of items - fudge, sweets, pencils, money, small toys etc.

Mother's Day Craft

Every year we make a lovely little Mother's Day Craft for the Cubs to take home. This year we decided that a gorgeous recycled item would be great!

We collected all the tins - condensed milk came in these tins - and we painted them a variety of pastel colours.

Lengths of wire were cut which would serve as handles and 1 side was attached to the cans. Hubby Darling drilled 2 holes in each can for me. The cubs then chose which beads they wanted to use and happy threaded them onto the wire. We finished it off by threading the piece of wire through the other hole, twisting it around itself and cutting it off and making it safe.

Just before Mother's Day we will put the fudge in a serviette and place it inside the tin ...... ready to be delivered with an extra big kiss and a cup of tea!

Pirate hats and patch

This craft is very simple and easy.

Take black cardboard and cut out the shape of a pirate hat. We cut it on the fold so only had to fasten the one side.

I pre-printed 'skull and cross-bones' and let the cubs cut those out as well as other pirate pictures which they pasted onto the hat.

The eyepatch is shaped slightly with a flap at the top which is folded over a thin piece of elastic which goes around the head. The flap can be glued which takes some time to dry or stapled.

As you can see, the cubs had great fun being Buccaneers and Privateers!

Simple kite - 11th April 2008

SIMPLE, QUICK AND EASY KITE

This is a fabulous kite to use when you don't know what to do with your Cubs and the wind is blowing!

Print it out onto an A4 size sheet of paper and cut out as above. The Cubs can enjoy colouring it in first and see how colourful they can make it. They can also make a tail which needs to be attached. Fold along fold-lines and re-inforce where indicated.

My computer was struck by lightning last week Saturday so I have not been able to be very creative!

Nevertheless, I have made the Elephant Woggles again using Craft Foam and they have turned out beautifully.

I have used 2 buttons for the eyes which just enhance his little face!

Hi there.

Some time back I took a pack of cubs camping to a wonderful place called Ezemvello. We learnt a lot about birds and wild animals and while we were there we made these gorgeous, little woggles.

We made them out of grey leather and they really looked like elephants but cardboard works just as well.

The pattern is very simple.

Cut the ears out as shown - remembering to cut two slits in the ears where the tabs can fit through.

Cut 1 head - and this can be decorated. On camp we used moveable eyes but fancy eyes could be drawn on - they look just as pretty.... or buttons could be sewn on.

Hello and welcome to the Crafts for Creative Hands blog. I am an Akela for a Cub Pack here in South Africa and love craft work. Every so often I will blog a craft that I have found to be fun and interesting for the cubs and I am sure you will find awesome for your children.

This is a crazy little racer car - how it works is that it has a marble inside of it and you place it on a surface that is slightly raised and whoola, away it goes at a tremendous speed!

It is very simple to make.

1. Cut out the pattern as shown above.

2. The measurement of A is 2cm wide and 11 cm long.

3. B measurement is 2cm x 2 cm

4. The rounded bits - lets call them C - are 4 cm long x 2cm wide.

Cut and colour in as you wish.

Fold as follows:

1. Fold both A's together and sticky tape together

2. Fold up C's and place a marble inside the case.

3. Place sticky tape at the top to keep closed.

Very cute and simple!
